Talayotic Menorca – Trepucó​

History of Trepucó​:

The settlement was surrounded by a wall, some sections of which are still preserved. This wall was built on top of earlier buildings that were destroyed by it. In the western part of the settlement, two square towers that served as bastions of the wall can still be seen.

Up to four talayots have been documented within the enclosure, although only two remain today.

The first of these talayots is located in the centre of the settlement and is the best preserved. It is circular in shape and has a truncated cone-shaped profile. On top of this talayot, an apse-shaped structure with a possible central column has been preserved. In modern times, it was reinforced with a wall on the northeast side to prevent its collapse.

The second talayot is located to the northwest of the settlement and is distinguished by an internal corridor that goes all the way to the top.

The taula enclosure, located to the south of the great talayot, was excavated in 1930. An ash deposit was found in front of the entrance. It is horseshoe-shaped, with a concave façade and is built with double-faced walls. The taula, which is almost five metres high, has the supporting stone embedded in the rock, and the capital is simply balanced on top of it. During excavation, the back of the taula was reinforced with concrete to ensure its stability​.

To the south of the taula enclosure, an archaeological intervention in 2010 revealed structural remains of three Talayotic houses and various ceramic, metal and bone objects. A lintelled doorway was also found, which corresponds to the remains of a building that was destroyed in antiquity to allow for the construction of the taula enclosure. These discoveries date the structures to the end of the 2nd millennium BC, between 1300 and 1000 BC.

How to get to the prehistoric settlement of Trepucó by car 

 

You can get there from the Maó ring road, leaving at the roundabout on the Trepucó road. You have to drive 1.5 km to reach the settlement along the rural road. It is well signposted and has a car park.
